Senior Vice President, Information Technology
As Senior Vice President, Information Technology, for NRG Energy, Kim Hales is responsible for overseeing IT, information security, data and analytics for the company. Kim has more than 20 years of experience in IT in roles including systems engineer, quality assurance, application development, information security, project and program management, finance, strategy and compliance (including NERC CIP).
Kim has also led several acquisition integrations and special projects for NRG where he partnered with senior leadership across business and functional units to achieve the company’s strategic goals. Kim continues this partnership with business and functional units on IT systems, processes and platforms to support growth and process efficiencies across NRG. Kim’s experience includes IT strategy, technical architecture, program and project management, agile development, process design utilizing ITIL and COBIT, and application and operations management.
Prior to this role, Kim served as Vice President, IT, for Renewables. In this role, Kim formed and led NRG’s emerging Renewables IT team. The team developed novel strategic data acquisition, business intelligence and analytics platforms as well as sought efficient integration with NRG’s commercial, plant, and corporate systems. These platforms helped the growth of the Renewables organization totaling over 4 GW. Kim also served as the head of the Idea Forum where he helped lead the charge of innovation at NRG, culminating in the creation of an ideation platform that furthers products and designs with innovation campaigns.
Kim previously served as a systems consultant in the power industry for 5 years, focusing on energy trading, risk management and support systems. Kim joined Reliant Energy in 2004 and continued with RRI Energy and GenOn and ultimately NRG.
Kim is a graduate of the University of Houston Honors College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Honors emphasizing the study of the genetics of oncology. Kim’s passion for technology, leadership and personal growth guided his career into IT and he’s never looked back.
