Human Welfare

Supporting key groups and initiatives designed to help those in need improves the quality of life for all in the communities we serve.

Food banks

NRG is a longtime supporter of community food banks. Since 2008, NRG, Reliant, Green Mountain Energy and Green Mountain Energy Sun Club® have donated more than $500,000 and countless volunteer hours to support the Houston Food Bank's fight against hunger. That includes the donation of a $200,000 solar array that will help the organization spend less on electricity and more on meals for hungry kids, seniors and others for decades to come.

In 2015, we donated a cargo van and supplies to New Jersey's Mercer Street Friends Food Bank to deliver food to communities in need. Additionally, through a miniature golf competition, our employees set a new internal company record by donating 5,568 pounds of food to the food bank. That topped the 2014 mark by more than 1,100 pounds.

Additional initiatives

  • HomeFront

We designed, donated and helped install a 275-panel, 84-kW solar array on HomeFront's new Family Campus that generates about half of the organization's electricity usage.
  • GRID Alternatives

Through an NRG grant to support the Solar Affordable Housing Program, GRID Alternatives trained and led teams of NRG volunteers as they installed solar panels on the homes of some low-income families.
  • Power2Serve

The Power2Serve® program, provided through our mobile power support vehicle, allows us to help communities when they need power the most. The 26-foot truck is equipped with solar and diesel generators and a custom canopy, all of which allow visitors to comfortably charge handheld devices, laptops and more.
  • Soles4Souls

Our Oswego plant in New York participates in the Soles4Souls program, which collects new and slightly used shoes for victims of natural disasters or people who live in extreme poverty.
