Carlsbad Energy Center

Carlsbad Energy Center

Meeting California's needs with fast-start peaking generation that integrates renewables and energy storage.

The need for new generation in parts of Southern California is urgent. After losing 2,200 MW of capacity with the retirement of the San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station, the region will lose another 965 MW of capacity when the Encina Power Station is retired to comply with State's regulation governing the use of ocean water for legacy steam boiler power plants (i.e., California's Once-Through Cooling Policy).

NRG is committed to providing reliable, efficient power to consumers in the San Diego area. To meet the need for local electrical generation due to these retirements, NRG is building the 500 megawatt (MW) Carlsbad Energy Center in Carlsbad, California. Carlsbad Energy Center will consist of five flexible, fast-starting General Electric LMS 100 turbines capable of delivering full output in as little as 10 minutes. The project will offer a number of environmental benefits: lower emissions, lower visual profile, new perimeter landscaping, significant reduction of potable water consumption, and the use of recycled water for power generation and irrigation purposes. The technology will operate during periods of peak demand and help integrate a growing supply of renewable power and energy storage. It will also ensure grid reliability when wind, solar and hydro power are not fully available, or when electricity transmission to the area is threatened by such circumstances as wildfires.

The project, currently under construction, is expected to be online by the end of 2018.

Beyond the delivery of efficient and reliable power, NRG has supported community programs to help improve the quality of life in Carlsbad and North San Diego County. From education and youth programs to environmental and sustainability projects, NRG and its employees are actively engaged.
