Sam Birgin – Technical Sales East, NRG Energy, Inc.

 

Sam has 14 years of experience in the energy industry, with a background in multiple competitive markets. Prior to joining NRG, Sam worked for some of the largest energy consultants and energy suppliers in the U.S. For NRG, he serves on the Technical Sales team as the representative focusing on the PJM and MISO regions. Sam is responsible for strategic power and gas solutions, as well as assisting customers with their demand response and renewable energy needs. He holds a B.S. in Business Marketing from Illinois State University, and an MASc in Environmental Management, focusing on Energy and Sustainability, from the University of Denver.

Joshua Young – Client Strategist, Portfolio Services, NRG Energy, Inc.

 

Joshua brings four years of experience to NRG from Direct Energy, where he’s worked across demand response, Power Pricing, Marketing and Communications. In his current role, he helps customers understand market trends and develop strategies that align with their energy goals — especially around cost savings and sustainability. Joshua holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Brian Erwin – Senior Gas Trader, Midcon Natural Gas Supply, NRG Energy, Inc.

 

With over 22 years in the energy industry and 19 years of trading experience, Brian has navigated roles from junior physical trader to senior financial strategist. His career spans retail, wholesale and major producer environments, giving him a comprehensive view of the energy landscape — including valuable exposure to the E&P side of the business. Brian has spent his entire career focused on the Midwest and Midcontinent regions, bringing deep regional expertise to every market move.

John Mehling - Senior Sales Manager, Mid-Continent, NRG Energy, Inc.

 

John brings over 25 years of energy industry experience to his role as Senior Sales Manager for the Mid-Continent region. He began his career in 1997 with Louisville Gas & Electric Energy and has since held key positions at ProLiance Energy, Hess Energy, Direct Energy, and now NRG Business. John’s expertise spans both wholesale and retail energy markets, with a strong focus on natural gas, power, demand response, and sustainability solutions. Since joining NRG’s Sales organization in 2024, he has led strategic growth initiatives across the Mid-Continent region, helping customers navigate a dynamic energy landscape. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management from Bellarmine University and an MBA from the University of Louisville — credentials that complement his deep industry insight and leadership acumen.
