Working Together for Texas Schools

What is the TASB Energy Cooperative?

The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) has been proudly serving members for over 70 years and represents one of the largest groups of public entities in the state of Texas.

The TASB Energy Cooperative was created by TASB in 2008 to help governmental entities procure energy and energy-related services. The Energy Cooperative seeks to increase the purchasing power of governmental entities and simplify the energy procurement process for its 400+ members.

In 2020, Direct Energy Business, an NRG company, was again selected as TASB's exclusive retail electric provider, a bid they have won since 2005. The powerful combination of the Energy Cooperative’s expertise with schools and governmental entities and our market knowledge provides TASB members with a partner they can trust.

Here's how we're helping Texas school districts save

A north Texas school district locked in over $1 million in contract savings by leveraging our market expertise to take advantage of historically low rates years in advance.

Because of COVID-19 school closures, a central Texas school district’s electricity usage dropped by more than 50 percent. Luckily, with unlimited swing, they did not incur any penalties for using less electricity.

A small county in west Texas joined the TASB Energy Cooperative Power Pool (CPP) to increase their purchasing power. This allowed the county to reduce their rate by $0.001 / kWh and save $415,000.

A Houston area school district locked in $600,000 in contract savings by using PowerBuyTM, a competitive auction at the wholesale level that’s exclusively available to Direct Energy and NRG customers.
